Being in hospital's no
joke - but Scunthorpe Hospital Radio is full of them (and
I don't mean the presenters!)
Our job is to take the
patients mind off the hospital environment, whether we're
telling silly jokes, reading a story, broadcasting expert
football commentary, or playing a patients favourite song.
By the way, did you notice
the word presenters? There are no DJs on our station - no
high powered jingles - we PRESENT the music, talking one-to-one
to the patient.
We're not here to boost
our own egos or pretend we're the latest hot-rocking DJ -
and that's a promise.
We're run on a voluntary
basis, by people like you.
Ages range from 16 to
70, male and female.
Some members are unemployed,
others are students, steelworkers, retired teachers, hospital
staff, a chef, a former police constable, a BT engineer -
the list is endless. Three of them actually work in professional
radio.
You see, real everyday
people, providing a special service for real everyday people.
Want to join us? We're
always on the lookout for volunteers,, and not just would-be
radio presenters. We also need producers, fund-raisers and
most-importantly of all ward visitors - collecting requests
from the patients.
To start with you'll
join a three-month training scheme, showing you the inside
view of what hospital radio is REALLY all about.
Then if you like us,
and we like you, you can join up as a full member.
