Royal Seal Of Approval
SHR is the first hospital radio station
in the country to be honoured by a visit by His Royal Highness,
the Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Phillip toured the station's studio
complex as part of the Queens Jubilee tour of the nation in 2002
- and to mark SHR's own golden jubilee. The Duke met a number
of station volunteers, and saw for himself how requests are collected
and played on air. He watched as a special programme was broadcast,
covering the Royal Visit to Scunthorpe - as her Majesty the Queen
arrived at the towns Lindsey Lodge Hospice. He later unveiled a plaque, marking SHR's 50th anniversary.
The visit was part
of a special day for SHR, which brought unique and exclusive coverage
of the Jubilee visit to patients at Scunthorpe General. Public
Relations Officer Sean Dunderdale told SHR Online: "Being
in hospital could have meant people missing out on such a special
occasion for Scunthorpe. Thankfully SHR volunteers, many of whom
took the day off especially for the event, made sure the patients
didn't miss out on anything - indeed, if anything, that got closer
to the events than normal." We teamed up with Scunthorpe's
commercial radio Lincs FM, who's reporters worked alongside SHR
members reporting on the days events. Indeed
SHR was the ONLY radio station to broadcast for each of the venues
where the Queen and the Duke visited, after being given special
access by Buckingham Palace. Lincs FM later broadcast its teatime
news programme from SHR's studios.
